About BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using your weight and height. It was developed in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet and is widely used as a screening tool — though it has real limitations.
BMI Ranges
| Category | BMI Range |
|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 |
| Normal weight | 18.5 – 24.9 |
| Overweight | 25 – 29.9 |
| Obese | 30 and above |
Limitations of BMI
BMI doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle. A muscular athlete can have a "overweight" BMI while being in excellent health. It also doesn't account for age, sex, or where fat is distributed in the body.
Use BMI as a starting point, not a definitive health verdict. For a fuller picture, talk to a healthcare provider who can assess body composition, blood work, and fitness.
Why maintaining a healthy weight matters
- Excess body fat increases risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers
- Being underweight can weaken the immune system and reduce bone density
- Even a 5–10% weight loss in overweight individuals can measurably improve health markers
