How Key Finding Works

Every musical key is a set of 7 notes (a scale). The key finder checks which of the 24 common major and minor keys contain all the notes you've selected. Select more notes for more precise results.

Tips for better results

  • Start with the note that feels like "home" — that's likely the root
  • Add the 3rd note of your melody: 4 semitones from root = major, 3 semitones = minor
  • With 4+ notes selected, matches become very specific
  • Multiple exact matches mean those keys share the same notes (e.g., C major and A minor)

About musical keys

A key defines the set of notes used in a piece and the chords that naturally sound at home. The 12 major keys and 12 minor keys each have a unique feel — explore them via the Circle of Fifths.
